A Recommitment to the Good Ol’ U.S. of A.

It has been two years since Buck Knives first announced their American Commitment and now, after a full review, they have emphatically renewed that commitment for 2011 and the years ahead.

“We found it has been effective in every way,” said CJ Buck, president of the 108-year-old family knifemaking company. “Most important, it has been our small way of helping reverse a growing trend to move jobs offshore, while America has too many jobless workers.”

Buck went on to explain that their policy has resulted in healthy increases in their Idaho workforce. This was possible because they brought back to America the production of many knives they had been outsourcing. As a result, Buck built 30% more product in Idaho in 2010 than they did the year before, a significant measure of success.

“We are proud that 100% of all our many hunting knives are made right here in Post Falls,” Buck said. “Perhaps more meaningful, 93% of the many new products we have introduced for 2011 are being made in our plant.”

AKTI Approves Updated Knife Definitions

In cooperation with industry leaders, the American Knife and Tool Institute (AKTI) approved updated standard knife definitions to use for legislation and law enforcement purposes. Visit http://www.akti.org/resources and click on the red “AKTI Approved Knife Definitions” link to see official, legal definitions for such edged tools as an “Arkansas Toothpick,” “Bowie Knife,” “Dagger,” “Ballistic Knife” and many more.

By accessing the updated definitions, knife owners, lawmakers and law enforcement officers can learn the history of knife terms in common and legal use, various states that prohibit specific types of knives, and the standard definitions the AKTI is encouraging be used for interpreting and enforcing knife laws.

“AKTI members believe that knives are inanimate objects, regardless of various differences such as length of blade, shape or style, the mechanism for opening, or the name used,” said AKTI President Goldie Russell of A. G. Russell Knives. “As a reasonable voice of the knife community, we have worked to change restrictive and vague knife laws to protect all knife owners.”

Originally adopted in 2005, the “AKTI Approved Knife Definitions” was revised to reflect clarifications to knife definition language that AKTI successfully used in law changes in Texas and the 2009 amendment to the 1958 Federal Switchblade Act.  Clarification of the terminology “bias toward closure” and states where certain knives are prohibited were included to make the publication even more informative. The “AKTI Approved Knife Definitions” has been distributed to lawmakers, police officers, attorneys and judges who recognize the credibility of the industry’s organizations and efforts to promote consistency and clarity. The details and diagrams have been very informative in discussions with legislators.

“We want to build on the work we’ve done and the reputation we have as an organization for those who work with or benefit from knives, and to support those who have questions about legal knife usage,” Russell said. “We encourage everyone to share the document with their legislators and local law enforcement.”

Loveless Book Now Available

You have to know within yourself that you can do it. If you can work a wrench, use a screwdriver or hammer a nail, you can make a knife.” ~ Bob Loveless

The legacy of Bob Loveless

All of the knife industry has been touched by the late Bob Loveless, a pioneer in knifemaking. We at F+W Media are humbled and proud to have had the opportunity, just months before his death, to work with Mr. Loveless on a book showcasing his knifemaking legacy. Knifemaking with Bob Loveless: Build Knives with a Living Legend, by Author Durwood Hollis, is an inspiration for all knife enthusiasts.

Widely recognized as the father of the modern custom knife movement, Mr. Loveless popularized the dropped hunter, Big Bear sub-hilt fighter and other knives, and, along with Richard Barney, co-wrote How to Make Knives, the precursor to this book.

For this project, he generously allowed Mr. Hollis unprecedented access to his workshop and his life, revealing his methods for creating a knife, including tempering and design, the materials and tools he used, and his recommendations for the care of your knife.

He was an innovator in his field and this book is a tribute to him and his craft. The pages of Knifemaking with Bob Loveless: Build Knives with a Living Legend, present:

  • Exclusive access and interviews, color photos and insight into the world’s most famous knifemaker and his private knifemaking shop
  • Spectacular photo gallery of famous Loveless knives and patterns, including never-before published images of custom Loveless knives
  • Insider information on how Bob Loveless grinds, heat-treats and tempers his blades
  • Step-by-step knifemaking techniques by Bob Loveless as told to author Durwood Hollis
  • Tips from Bob Loveless on field use, handling and care of his or any knives
  • Foreword by A.G. Russell, proprietor and publisher of the largest mail order knife company and catalog in existence—A.G. Russell Knives and “Russell’s For Men”

Survival Skills Authority Joins Buck Knives Pro Staff

Buck Knives has added survival instructor Ron Hood to their growing Pro Staff, bringing new focus on a key aspect of the knife market. This new agreement also will incorporate Hood’s skills as a knife designer, working with Buck in the development of new survival/tactical knives.
Hood has taught courses at UCLA, and has produced and published numerous award winning survival training videos. He has been featured on many TV shows and assisted with the training that goes on behind the Man vs. Wild TV show on Discovery Channel. He also has taught many military operatives the skills they need to survive in harsh outdoor conditions, based on first-hand knowledge and skills from his days in the Military Intelligence Community while in the Army Security Agency.
Hood says he bought his first Buck knife when he returned from Vietnam in 1967.
