The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) — the trade association for the firearms, ammunition, hunting and shooting sports industry — has learned that FOX Sports Media Group has banned advertisements featuring firearms, knives and ammunition from its coverage of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) events.
While the UFC has yet to make an official announcement, NSSF has confirmed that “absolutely no firearms, ammo, hunting or knife companies will be permitted as sponsors in any Zuffa-promoted events.”
NSSF is encouraging all gun and knife owners, sportsmen and firearms and knives enthusiasts to contact FOX today and urge them to rescind this anti-knife, anti-gun corporate policy. FOX’s decision to ban advertisements for lawful products owned by millions of Americans is nothing more than corporate gun and knife control.

These period bowies by Robert L. Appleby Jr. make my “Editors Favorites from the Knives 2013 Book” list because they scream early American knife renaissance. The clip- and spear-point bowies parade hand-rubbed, satin-finished 440C blades with fileworked spines, and cast white-bronze guards and pommels.
The sambar stag handle scales are inspired choices, particularly with nickel escutcheon plates and domed nickel pins. Each comes with a wet-molded leather sheath dyed ox-blood red with gold embossing and an antiqued nickel throat and tip. Getting excited yet? Me, too. The photo is by Chuck Ward.
Some of the finest artists in the world would have trouble achieving the mermaid scene carved and sculpted into the titanium grip of the Arpad Bojtos fixed blade. For that reason alone it is one of the “Editors Favorites from the Knives 2013 Book.” The carved and sculpted grip is inlaid with gold, silver and mother-of-pearl, the latter also creatively carved, and attached to a Damasteel blade.

The temper line alone on Michael Burch’s flipper folder is enough to catch the old knife enthusiast eye, not to mention a Samurai warrior, that, thanks to Jody Muller color engraving, emerges from the gold, copper and stainless steel bolsters of the 1095 folding tanto.
The Samurai remains partially concealed by a crosshatching of mammoth ivory, as well as that smoky temper line. The handle treatment gives it an exotic, bamboo-like look that fits the engraved subject matter, as well as the blade style, and all taken together propels the knife to the status of an “Editor’s Favorite from the Knives 2013 book.” (SharpByCoop.com is responsible for the photography.

I don’t generally abuse knives. Though I do fish, camp, hike and ski whenever I get the chance, using knives hard and putting them away wet is pretty unusual for me. The hardest I ever used/abused a knife was out in the horse pasture, and I laugh about that.
It had been a long day. I’m also not the “horse person” in my family. That would be my wife, and I wasn’t thrilled to be replacing fence posts, a job I’ve since become accustomed to yearly. Anyway, I was tired. Did I mention I’m an editor and writer? And I needed to cut some high-tensile electric wire (the fence was unplugged at the time—at least I had that right). I didn’t have a wire cutter on me, and the garage had to be at least 50 yards away. I pulled out my serrated Spyderco folder. The model escapes me, but it was a good knife, pocket clip, one-hand opener, lockback, the works. I figured the serrated blade could cut the wire, and cut the wire it did. The thick wire also chipped a blade serration, but it was well worth saving a trip to the garage. I cut several more wires that day with the Spyderco, and by the time I was done for the day, the blade looked like a toothless mountain model rather than a big-city blade. Oh well, there were more knives in the drawer, and that Spyderco holds a place of honor among them, though missing a few teeth.
