BLADE Show Will Welcome “The Hammer”

Larry “The Hammer” Harley, one of the stars of National Geographic’s hot new TV series, Lords of War, will exhibit his knives and conduct a seminar at the BLADE Show (www.bladeshow.com) May 31-June 2 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta.

Meet The Hammer in person at his BLADE Show seminar 3 p.m. Saturday in Room 104 of the Cobb Galleria and ask him any and all questions concerning knives, swords, his TV show and more. And bring the kids, too. Larry’s presentation is suited for the entire family. He also will be exhibiting his knives in the BLADE Show hall at table 9Q .

Harley has long been known to knife enthusiasts as a fine knifemaker, an ABS journeyman smith and among the more colorful characters in the knife industry. It is small wonder that the National Geographic Channel picked him to be one of the stars of its Lords of War television series. On the show Larry appraises any and all knives, swords and edged weapons, and also helps test fire the antique and other guns appraised—and he almost always outshoots his Lords of War co-stars in the process.

The Hammer’s credits are many. In addition to making knives for many years, he has involved himself in the knife industry in a number of ways. He conducted knife hog hunts for several years and was among the first to win at the early ABS cutting

competitions. He is also extremely active in teaching bladesmithing to youngsters, including a heavy involvement in same with the ABS. He has conducted hammer-ins for both youths and adults at his shop in Bristol, Tennessee. His son Richard has been making knives for a number of years now and is quite good at it. Though The Hammer may come across as a good ol’ country boy—which he is—he is also highly educated and well-versed in a wide range of topics. Meet him at the BLADE Show. You will enjoy it.

8 Days To The BLADE Show: Let’s Go See Ernie!

It’s only eight days to the BLADE Show (www.bladeshow.com) June 8-10 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta, where Ernest Emerson fans everywhere will once again get their chance to see his knives and the man himself.

    For those of you who don’t know Emerson, he is a pioneer in tactical folders and his custom knives are in demand about as much as any other maker’s anywhere. He has taught his Emerson Combat System to combat operatives all over the world, and has appeared on any number of cable television and radio shows and written for several leading websites, sharing his views on his knives, his Combat System and any number of other topics. The Usual Suspect Network, a leading Internet knife discussion group, is populated mostly by Emerson fans. He also has an expanding line of apparel, has made electric guitars and much more—though in the end it always seems to come back to his knives, which includes an extensive line of factory models, too.

    Emerson, shown above in a photo by Mike Searson, attends only a few choice shows, and the BLADE Show is one he never misses. (OK, maybe he missed one or two BLADE Shows somewhere in the distant past, but those don’t count.) In addition to displaying his custom and factory knives at the show, he also holds a lottery and will conduct the seminar, “Becoming The Warrior,” show Saturday at 1 p.m. in Room 104.

Walk with knife industry legends at the 35th Annual BLADE Show June 3-5 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta.

You will see any number of knife industry legends, including such members of the BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall Of Fame© as A.G. and Goldie Russell, Ken Onion, Bill Adams, D’ Holder, Bruce Voyles, Sal Glesser and others at the BLADE Show.

Goldie became the first female member of the Hall two years ago and, in the process, joined husband A.G. as the Hall’s only husband-and-wife team. A.G. is one of the few living founding members of The Knifemakers’ Guild and a treasure trove of information on the history of modern cutlery. Goldie basically runs operations at A.G. Russell Knives now and plays an active role in supporting the American Knife & Tool Institute and its goal of protecting the rights of all knife enthusiasts.

Want information on the history of knives in general? Knife industry legends Adams and Voyles can regale you with vintage tales of the knife industry, both domestic and international. Speaking of knife industry legends, Onion may be the world’s most famous custom knifemaker and has designed any number of knives for CRKT and other knife companies. A card-carrying member of knife industry legends, Holder has made knives since the 1970s and served as president of the Guild for a number of years and has worked closely with AKTI.

Glesser’s Spyderco has set sporting knife industry standards in introducing and/or popularizing such knife features as the hole in the blade for easy opening, pocket clips and serrated edges. Sal also has worked closely with AKTI.

Knife industry legends abound at the BLADE Show. Ernest Emerson not only is famous for his CQC-6 and CQC-7 folders but also for teaching self-defense courses to military and law enforcement officials worldwide.

Stop by and see J. Neilson of Forged In Fire for the latest on television’s hottest show on knifemaking. Visit with knifemaker Steve Johnson, who worked in the shop of the legendary Bob Loveless for several years and is now one of the world’s leading custom knifemakers. BLADE Show Will Have First Women’s Championship
First-ever women's BLADE Show World Championship Cutting Competition.
Terri Lynn of Jantz Supply will be among the participants in the inaugural women’s BLADE Show World Championship Cutting Competition conducted by BladeSports International.

The inaugural BLADE Show World Championship Cutting Competition for women will be held during the 35th Annual BLADE Show June 3-5 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta.

Held in conjunction with the men’s 14th Annual BLADE Show World Championship Competition, the women’s title event, as well as the men’s, will be conducted by BladeSports International in “The Courtyard”—the parking lot of the show’s host hotel, the Renaissance Waverly. Festivities will commence at 4:15 p.m. the Saturday of the show, June 4, under a huge outdoor tent new for this year sponsored by Burr King.

The tentative list of women who will compete includes Jessica Elias, who became the first woman to vie in the men’s World Championship last year, Shanna Kemp, Jessica Hinton, Terri Lynn and Nicole Warden. The winner will receive a fully engraved championship belt buckle similar to the one awarded to the winner in the men’s World Championship.

The BLADE Show World Championships consist of a series of cutting tests performed by each contestant, including chopping 2x4s in half, cutting free-hanging rope, cutting rolling golf balls in half and other tests, including seeing how many water-filled plastic bottles standing all in a row the contestant can successfully cut. To add to the drama, exactly which cutting tests will be included in the event are usually kept unknown to the contestants until right up to when the Championships begin. Points are awarded via a system that considers the most successful cuts in the least  amount of time. The contestants must use fixed blades that cannot exceed specified blade and overall lengths, pass stringent BSI safety courses and observe other requirements.

In the men’s World Championship, Dan Keffeler is expected to return to defend his title. He has won the BLADE Show World Championship three years running, a record for consecutive titles, and will be attempting to win an unprecedented  fourth straight. The only other person to win three World Championships is Reggie Barker, though he did not win them consecutively. The tentative list of men expected to compete includes two-time world champ Gary Bond, three-time national champ Donavon Phillips, Daniel Coldiron, Jerry Kemp, Jo Smith, Christoper Warden, Brad Stallsmith, Luke Stallsmith, William LaRue, Dwight Schoneweis, Mark Elick, Andrew Blanchard, L.T. Wright, Dennis Mashburn, Russel Cain and Mike Eubanks.

11 Days To The BLADE Show: World Cutting Championship

    Want to see blades cut, chop, whack and otherwise do what they are designed to do? The 10th Annual BLADE Show World Championship Cutting Competition, conducted by BladeSports International, will provide plenty of it during the 31st Annual BLADE Show (www.bladeshow.com).

    The show will run June 8-10 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta. All BLADE Show ticket holders are admitted to the World Championship Cutting Competition for free.

    Tomorrow it all begins: the 31st Annual BLADE Show (www.bladeshow.com) June 8-10 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta. To see all 900 exhibitors and thousands of knives and knife accessories, you’d better bring your best, most comfortable walking shoes. Some people bring two pair, switching out one for the other for the second half of the day’s walking and standing.

    Show hours are 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Daily ticket prices are $15. As part of our “Welcome Home Troops” theme for the show, all active military will be offered a discounted show ticket rate of $8. The discount applies to law enforcement personnel, too. An active I.D. card must be presented onsite to receive the discount.
