The private equity company, Black Orchid Equity, LLC (a South Dakota company), has acquired the assets of Moteng and has plans to grow the company’s volume dramatically. “We are thoroughly capitalized and in the process of doing three things – stocking up on inventory, selling at the most competitive prices allowable and becoming the largest knife distributor in the country,” says Blake Whitney Thompson, one of the new owners. The new owners of the company, based in San Diego, plan to use Moteng as a platform to acquire other distribution companies in the industry and to fund/invest in certain manufacturers that they represent.

Loveless-Parke Is Part Drop Point, Part Skinner
Spending a day with the Loveless-Parke drop point would be like spending a day in the park. What I love about this knife is that it is a drop-point hunter, but it has that high grind and skinner-like hump along the blade spine toward the tip.
Only 36 knives bearing the Loveless-Parke logo were ever produced (Parke was an investor in Loveless’s knifemaking business for a short period of time.) This knife, made in 1967, is an example of that effort. It features a brass singe guard and stag handle with a hidden tang. And because I was born in 1967, it’s all that more sweet to me.

Sweet Simplicity Featured In Knives 2013 Book
My second Editor’s Favorites pick from the Knives 2013 book is included for its sweet simplicity. Don’t let the straightforward, integral form of Billy Mace Imel’s dagger fool you, though, the lines flow symmetrically, with rounded edges along the grip, a pointed pommel and penetratingly pointed blade.

2013 ABS Hammer-In Season Begins!
The American Bladesmith Society (ABS) Hammer-In season for 2013 is about to begin with the Great Smoky Mountain hammer-in event in Clyde, North Carolina, on March 15-17. That’s followed in April by the Spring Piney Woods hammer-in at the Moran School Of Bladesmithing in Washington, Arkansas. The ABS Hammer-In Directors have some exceptional demonstrations and special events planned for 2013.
The setting for the Great Smoky Mountain Hammer-In is Haywood Community College, and demonstrators include Adam and Haley DesRosiers, Greg Neely, Butch Sheely, Jason Knight, Scott McGhee and Shane Maust. Click here to download the event flyer.
Something About This Drop Point Hunter
I don’t know if it’s the stabilized spalted-maple handle, the way the drop-point blade becomes oh-so pointed at the end, the full tang, red liner or its almost-jutting-out handle butt, there’s a sweet spot in my heart for this hunter from T.K. Steingass of West Virginia. So, let’s call it the next in the “Editor’s Favorites From the Knives 2013 Book,” and call it a day.
