United Cutlery Lands Replicas License for The Hobbit Movies

United Cutlery announced that it was awarded the licensing agreement to produce replicas of weapons used in the highly-anticipated films The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, each directed by Peter Jackson. The films are productions of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). 

United Cutlery, of course, held the license to reproduce weapons from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, and BLADE Magazine ran several of the weapons, stills from the movies and images of characters on the covers and in features of several past issues.

The new line will consist of Dwarven and Elven weapons and arms replicas, along with signature icons, such as the Staff of Gandalf, Sting, and the legendary sword of Thorin Oakenshield, Orcrist. Each collectible will be exactly replicated from the actual film props created by Weta Workshop for the film production. Sting and Orcrist will lead off the line, which will be released in late 2012.

Knifemaking Pioneer Bob Loveless Dead at 81

We received news just now that Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Famer© Bob Loveless passed away today at 11:30 a.m. He was 81.

Jack Lucarelli, author of the book “James B. Lile The Arkansas Knifesmith,” informed BLADE by e-mail at 4:50 p.m. of Bob’s passing. Jack, who is also an actor, stuntman and long-time collector of Loveless knives, said Bob’s health had declined rapidly the past two months. Loveless had suffered from lung cancer. Lucarelli said despite his declining health, Bob was in good spirits and mentally sharp up to the end.

There will be special stories in BLADE on Loveless in the coming months. Meanwhile, please join us in remembering the man who is probably the most important knifemaker in modern cutlery history.

World’s Top Makers Converge at ECCKS Friday Through Sunday

Brian Tighe, maker of the “Twist Tighe” in all Damasteel damascus steel, is slated to be among the world’s top custom makers exhibiting their knives at the 23rd Annual East Coast Custom Knife Show Friday through Sunday, March 2-4.

 

Produced by Steve D’lack of Hawthorn Galleries, the show will be held at the Westin Hotel-Jersey City Newport in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Two weeks from tomorrow, the 31st Annual BLADE Show (www.bladeshow.com), the world’s most important knife event, will go down June 8-10 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta, Georgia.

    Join the over 900 exhibitors that include knifemakers, knife companies, knife accessory companies, knifemaking suppliers, purveyors, swordsmiths, sheath makers, knifemaking equipment manufacturers—in other words, everything that has to do with stuff that cuts—at the biggest knife party anywhere. Show times will be Friday, 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    In the coming days in this space, you will see capsule descriptions of special events within the event—seminars, the show within a show, the Survival+Tactical Gear Expo, the BLADE Magazine Knife-Of-The-Year® Awards, the annual induction into the Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall Of Fame©, the annual meeting of the American Bladesmith Society held in conjunction with the show—and much more.
