BSI Elects New Officers

Donavon Phillips is the new executive director of BladeSports International, according to Jose Diaz.

   In addition, Otto Ojevaar was elected to the BSI board of directors. Gary Bond, Steve Singer, Scott Devanna and Warren Osborne remain on the board.

   “These are good guys and deserve credit for taking on so much responsibility,” noted Diaz, outgoing executive director.

   BSI conducts the annual BLADE Show World Championship Cutting Competition, as well as a year-round schedule of cutting competitions that includes contestants not only from the USA but also England, the Netherlands, Australia and elsewhere.

Tennessee Knife Rights Bill to Senate Vote—Contact Today!

Knife Rights reports that Tennessee Senate Bill SB1015, which would enact the state’s Knife Law Preemption, repeal Tennessee’s antiquated ban on automatic knives (switchblades) and repeal the the state’s 4-inch knife length limitation, has been voted out of committee with a 7-1 vote of recommendation for passage. Requested by Knife Rights and sponsored by Sen. Mike Bell, the bill now moves to the full Senate.

Preemption ensures citizens can expect consistent enforcement of state knife laws everywhere in a state. Preemption prevents the creation of, or eliminates, a patchwork of local ordinances and laws more restrictive than state law which serve to confuse or entrap those traveling within or through the state. Knife Rights has helped pass similar Knife Preemption Laws in Arizona, Utah, New Hampshire and Georgia and helped repeal knife bans in New Hampshire, Washington and Missouri.

If you live, work or travel in Tennessee, please contact your senator and ask him/her to vote Yes on SB1015.

Whether writing or calling, all that is necessary is to simply ask them to vote in favor of SB1015. Keep it short and to the point.

Fight Anti-Knife D.A., Attend NY Custom Knife Show!

One of the oldest and best custom knife shows begins today at the Westin-Jersey City Newport Hotel with the commencement of the 34th Annual New York City Custom Knife Show in Jersey City, New Jersey.

The show runs today through Sunday.

Why is the New York City Custom Knife Show in New Jersey, you ask? Until last year the show was in the Big Apple—but that was before Manhattan D.A. Cyrus Vance began his illegal, oppressive witch hunt of legal manual-opening knives, mislabeling them as gravity knives, switchblades, etc.

Show your disapproval of Vance’s criminal behavior by attending the NYC Show. Not only will you be spitting in the face of a pox on knives, you will see some of the world’s best custom knives.

Great Legislative News Out of New Hampshire

New Hampshire Representative Jenn Coffey sent this message to the BLADE offices yesterday:

 

I am happy to report that HB544 passed unanimously in the NH House today and bring us one step closer to knife preemption in New Hampshire!
HB330 also passed the New Hampshire house today on a roll call vote of 244 to 109 to create Constitution Carry!
Both bills, for which I am the prime sponsor, will now move over to the Senate!

The NH House unanimously agreed that it makes little sense for towns to be allowed to make conflicting laws regulating knives. If one were to pass from jurisdiction to a jurisdiction with conflicting law you could easily find yourself in conflict with a town ordinance that is different than your destination or place of origin. Therefore HB544 should become law in New Hampshire, creating the same state preemption we now enjoy with firearms for knives.

Pause and Reflect on 9/11

We were all in a state of shock on this day 10 years ago. Along with the horrific spectacle of the Twin Towers collapsing, everything America stood for seemed to be coming down around our heads. But out of that tragedy we emerged, stronger than ever in many ways, even if many think we as a nation overreacted in others.

On this day 10 years later, give thanks for what you have. Hug your mom, your wife, your kids, your dog (or cat), or just sit in your front or backyard and look around at the things that many in this world would love to have—and remember the untold scores who have given their lives for you to keep.

I, for one, will think of Heather Voyles Bradford, the daughter of my old boss, Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame© member Bruce Voyles. Heather had tried for years to have children and in the past few days she succeeded in giving birth to her first child, Samuel Forrest Bradford. A decade after all the devastation visited upon New York City, the Pentagon, a lonely field in Pennsylvania and America as a whole, the Voyles are celebrating a new addition. Somehow it seems appropriate that when so many lost so much 10 years ago, there is a new face in this world today to help continue to make America and all Americans proud of what we are now, and what we will be in the future.
