Man’s Oldest Tool Just Got Older

New research suggests ancient humans made tools with edges “like a stone-age Leatherman or Swiss Army knife,” according to one anthropologist, much earlier than previously thought.

Using a sophisticated technique to date the dirt surrounding the tools, researchers calculated the more advanced tools to be 1.76 million years old. That compares to the 1.4-to-1.6 million-year-old such tools previously thought to have been the oldest.

Identified as “hand axes, cleavers and picks,” the tools required “a good deal of forethought as well as dexterity to manufacture,” one paleoanthropologist said. The axes were suited for butchering animals or chopping wood, while the picks were used for digging holes.

Buck Prepares To Debut 2012 Knives

POST FALLS, IDAHO–From the time Hoyt Buck made his first knife in 1902, Buck Knives’ goal always has been the same: make knives that will serve the user better, with reliable and superior performance. In the 110 years since, Buck Knives has found many ways to create an expanding line of knives that guarantee exceptional quality, with the needed features and benefits. Now they are finalizing plans for the SHOT Show where they will unveil more advances in 2012, as they celebrate their 110th birthday with innovative new products.

Among their fresh departures is an answer to the growing demand for women’s hunting knives with the new Haley Heath ErgoHunter Adrenaline Series. As the number of active female hunters has doubled in the past decade and now totals more than 3 million, there is a growing demand for knives to meet their needs and preferences.

The Haley Heath series was developed in partnership with one of America’s most accomplished female hunters. In the joint announcement, Haley Heath said, “I am excited to be the first female featured with her own line of hunting knives and from the number-one brand in hunting.” Haley and G.O. Heath are the hosts of the popular “Family Traditions with Haley Heath” television program on the Sportsman Channel.

There are eight basic knives in the Haley Heath series – five fixed-blades and three folding lockblades, offering fixed gut-hook versions and three steel options. All are ergonomically designed for the best grip for women, including a grooved handle.

“This important series is just one aspect of our new 2012 knife line,” said CJ Buck, president and the fourth generation of the Buck knifemaking family. “We are adding other new hunting knives, of course, as well as tactical/survival knives, knives for campers and hikers, and our annual line of Limited Edition knives with so much appeal to collectors.”

Among the additions to Buck’s growing line of tactical/survival knives will be the TOPS/Buck CSAR-T Liaison neck knife, a style popular for its light weight, small size and ease of carry, yet providing the solid blade needed quickly in emergency situations.

Buck also emphasized that Buck Knives will continue to fulfill its American commitment, further reducing the use of offshore outsourcing, making all of their hunting knives in their Post Falls, Idaho, plant as well as the vast majority of their other new products.

Medal Of Honor Recipients Lead Veterans Day Event

Medal Of Honor recipients lead Veterans Day ceremony.
Medal Of Honor recipients Sammy Davis (left) and Harold Fritz (right) will lead a special Case/Zippo Veterans Day ceremony today at 3 p.m.

In recognition of Veterans Day, Case, Zippo and two Medal Of Honor recipients will install an exclusive Medal Of Honor commemorative knife and lighter set in the Zippo/Case Museum today in Bradford, Pennsylvania.

Medal Of Honor awardees Sammy Davis and Harold Fritz, both of whom received the country’s most prestigious military honor for their gallant actions during the Vietnam War, will lead the ceremonies, which begin today at 3 p.m. Others who will help lead the ceremonies will be Greg Booth, Zippo/CASE CEO, and George Duke, owner and chairman of the board for Zippo/Case.

The Case trapper features a red, white and blue themed bone handle, intricately laser-engraved with images of an American eagle, American flag and a reproduction of the Medal Of Honor Society seal. The Zippo lighter features a high-polish chrome Armor case with deep dimensional engraving, a 24k-gold repro of the MOH seal and a heavy gold-plated inside unit.

Sometimes known as the “real” Forrest Gump because his heroic acts and MOH citation were the basis for Gump’s Vietnam story, Davis was able to hold off an overwhelming force of Vietcong long enough to tend to three wounded GIs on the other side of the river from his original position. He couldn’t swim so he paddled across the river on an air mattress, and other GIs followed him. He gave all the wounded soldiers morphine and provided cover fire before returning to the fight, where he was wounded. He carried a Case pocketknife throughout his tour of duty.

Fritz led a point-blank charge on a North Vietnamese position in Quan Loi and was hit several times by shrapnel and small arms fire. He later returned to the battlefield to find his Zippo lighter, a present from his wife, that had been in his left breast pocket and stopped a bullet, saving his life.

For more on today’s ceremonies, contact Amanda Kleps at [email protected] or call 814-368-2992.

Vacation Knives: Learn to Whittle & Carve

For the times when the kids complain about how there’s nothing to do during summer vacation, buy them “Whittling Twigs & Branches” by Chris Lubkemann. Heck, you might even want to try your hand with this book, which includes step-by-step demos on how to carve roosters and other birds, flowers, trees and letter openers from ordinary twigs and branches using only a pocketknife.

Of course, you’ll need a pocketknife for the job, and a good one is the Kutmaster Team Realtree stockman with clip, spey and sheepfoot blades for carving, whittling and fine-tuning your sculpted creation.
