Survival Skills Authority Joins Buck Knives Pro Staff

Buck Knives has added survival instructor Ron Hood to their growing Pro Staff, bringing new focus on a key aspect of the knife market. This new agreement also will incorporate Hood’s skills as a knife designer, working with Buck in the development of new survival/tactical knives.
Hood has taught courses at UCLA, and has produced and published numerous award winning survival training videos. He has been featured on many TV shows and assisted with the training that goes on behind the Man vs. Wild TV show on Discovery Channel. He also has taught many military operatives the skills they need to survive in harsh outdoor conditions, based on first-hand knowledge and skills from his days in the Military Intelligence Community while in the Army Security Agency.
Hood says he bought his first Buck knife when he returned from Vietnam in 1967.

Bring Your Own Steak Knife (and Fork)

An article posted by Bee Wilson on The Guardian website’s Life & Style blog is titled “Bring Your Own Cutlery: Why We Should All Carry Our Own Knives and Forks.” Following is a short excerpt from the interesting and informative article about the practice—and suggestion that the tradition continue—of bringing your own knives, forks and necessary cutlery to restaurants.

In China and Japan, a “bring-your-own-chopsticks” movement has sprung up. Could a similar trend take off here, or are we too wedded to disposable plastic cutlery? 7015 Old Hickory Slicer 75-8

In medieval Europe, people used to carry their own personal knife – a sharp one – for every eating occasion. There was no expectation that cutlery would be provided, except perhaps for spoons. When the meal was done, the knife was wiped clean on a napkin and carefully returned to your person. The knife was worn so habitually that – as with a watch – you might start to regard it as a part of yourself and forget it was there. A 6th-century text reminded monks to detach their knives from their belts before they went to bed, so they didn’t cut themselves. Like many aspects of medieval life, this knife carrying now seems pretty weird.

But was portable cutlery really such a bad idea? Click here to read more.

Loveless Book Now Available

You have to know within yourself that you can do it. If you can work a wrench, use a screwdriver or hammer a nail, you can make a knife.” ~ Bob Loveless

The legacy of Bob Loveless

All of the knife industry has been touched by the late Bob Loveless, a pioneer in knifemaking. We at F+W Media are humbled and proud to have had the opportunity, just months before his death, to work with Mr. Loveless on a book showcasing his knifemaking legacy. Knifemaking with Bob Loveless: Build Knives with a Living Legend, by Author Durwood Hollis, is an inspiration for all knife enthusiasts.

Widely recognized as the father of the modern custom knife movement, Mr. Loveless popularized the dropped hunter, Big Bear sub-hilt fighter and other knives, and, along with Richard Barney, co-wrote How to Make Knives, the precursor to this book.

For this project, he generously allowed Mr. Hollis unprecedented access to his workshop and his life, revealing his methods for creating a knife, including tempering and design, the materials and tools he used, and his recommendations for the care of your knife.

He was an innovator in his field and this book is a tribute to him and his craft. The pages of Knifemaking with Bob Loveless: Build Knives with a Living Legend, present:

  • Exclusive access and interviews, color photos and insight into the world’s most famous knifemaker and his private knifemaking shop
  • Spectacular photo gallery of famous Loveless knives and patterns, including never-before published images of custom Loveless knives
  • Insider information on how Bob Loveless grinds, heat-treats and tempers his blades
  • Step-by-step knifemaking techniques by Bob Loveless as told to author Durwood Hollis
  • Tips from Bob Loveless on field use, handling and care of his or any knives
  • Foreword by A.G. Russell, proprietor and publisher of the largest mail order knife company and catalog in existence—A.G. Russell Knives and “Russell’s For Men”

Father Fends Off Mountain Lion With Spyderco Caly 3.5

A 6-year-old Texas boy is recovering after being attacked by a mountain lion while walking with his family during a vacation at Big Bend National Park. Rivers Hobbs was attacked late Sunday by the animal as his family returned to their room in the Chisos Mountain Lodge.

The mountain lion emerged from the bushes and onto the sidewalk where the family was walking, and clamped its jaws onto the 6-year-old boy’s face. Rivers’ father, Jason, reached down, retrieved and opened his Spyderco Caly 3.5 folder and used it to stab the mountain lion in the chest, causing the cat to flee.

“It sneaked up on me,” the young Hobbs said.

“The cat was clamped onto his face, I reached down and got my pocketknife out and stabbed the cat in the chest and it let go at that point,” Jason explained.

The boy’s wounds on the right side of his face took 17 stitches to close. The family is expected to return to their Leander, Texas, home late Wednesday. Once there, Hobbs will have to go though a series of rabies shots.

It was the second such attack of the day in the same area. The mountain lion tried to attack another family but was fended off with a backpack.
