BLADE Issue Devoted Entirely To The Military

Find out what knives they’re using, how, where and why, learn about standard-issue military pieces, what makers are fashioning war knives for whom, which manufacturers specialize in the genre, and read real-life stories about our soldiers, interviews with our soldiers and stories written for our soldiers. They all like to tell about their favorite carry knives, and the photos of them on location “somewhere in Iraq, Afghanistan or …. ” are fascinating.
It’s the only knife magazine ever printed that is entirely devoted to the military.

American Knife and Tool Institute Spotlights Legislative Successes at Annual Meeting
Atlanta, GA — On June 6, 2010, members of the American Knife and Tool Institute (www.AKTI.org) met in Atlanta for the group’s Annual Membership Meeting and Legislative Update to learn about the organization’s successful efforts to defend our rights to own and carry knives. Plans for future efforts were also on the agenda. The non-profit organization’s mission is to ensure that Americans will always be able to buy, sell, own, carry and use knives and edged tools. Its goals are to: Educate the public, legislators and law enforcement about knives. Promote reasonable, responsible and consistent knife legislation. Inform with accurate industry, historical and technical information.
“AKTI has been the reasonable and responsible voice of the knife-making and knife-using community since 1998,” said Executive Director Jan Billeb. “As the advocacy voice for the entire knife community, AKTI has a successful, proven record of accomplishments.”
During its annual meeting, members were updated regarding successful legislative initiatives in the last year that limited restrictive knife laws and protect law-abiding citizens. Success stories included Kansas, New Hampshire, and Texas where major changes were achieved. AKTI led the effort to oppose a U.S. Customs’ attempt to define nearly all folding knives as switchblades and make de facto criminals of millions of knife owners. Together with coalition members, they were successful in amending the Federal Switchblade Act with language previously used by AKTI in Texas HB 4456.
AKTI also announced the development of a new website at www.AKTI.org which will provide a central location for information on current state and national knife laws, AKTI initiatives to help re-define knife terminology in current laws and to change old outdated laws related to knife ownership and carry. The site will also add to AKTI’s state of preparedness for the next effort to restrict our right to carry man’s oldest tool.
In other news, three new board members were introduced: Columbia River Knife & Tool (CRKT), Rod Bremer, co-founder and President; Meyerco, Mike Manrose, Vice President; and United Cutlery, Clint Kadel, President /CEO.
CRKT was appointed to fill a vacancy. Meyerco and United Cutlery were added as the Board of Regents was increased from seven to nine, a move that was part of an initiative to expand AKTI’s effort to “Keep Knives in American Lives.”

Anti-Knife Insanity Victimizes Georgia Teenager
In yet another example of anti-knife insanity, Jack Persyn, 13, was in chess club before class when he discovered a short knife in the bag he brought to his Georgia school. The teen was severely punished after reporting that he accidently brought the knife to school.
Persyn’s aunt had bought the bag from a yard sale, and gave the purchase to the teen without checking inside first. After Persyn told his Lanier Middle School teacher that he accidentally brought the weapon to class, the teen received four days of in-school suspension, a punishment his father Bill Persyn says is excessive.
“There was never a safety issue,” Persyn told WXIA. “No harm was done. It was a genuine, honest mistake, yet he got pulled out of class for four days. I can see a one-hour detention if they had to do something, but this is nonsensical.”

So, what was the lesson this impressionable teen has learned from this experience? It certainly wasn’t that he should be honest in future dealings with his teachers or authorities.

Blackie Collins Memorial Service Aug. 20
A special memorial service for Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame© member Blackie Collins will be held Saturday, Aug. 20.
Collins was killed July 20 in a motorcycle accident.
The service will be held at 3 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church on 2003 Charleston Highway in Cayce, South Carolina.
Mr. Collins was the founder of BLADE® Magazine, a founding member of the Knifemakers’ Guild, a life member of the NRA, South Carolina Arms Collectors Association, South Carolina Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the Harley Owners Group. He enjoyed kayaking and motorcycle riding, and was an avid reader.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Valentine Collins; two daughters, Laurie O’Berry of Folkston, Ga., and Cassie (Roddey) Walker of Rock Hill; six grandchildren, Caroline Pierce, Cayla Pierce, Scott Kennedy, Adam O’Berry, Ashlee O’Berry and Delainee Walker; three great-grandchildren, Jacob Pierce, Camryn Hayes and Italy Pierce; and two brothers, knifemaker Michael (Tonda) Collins of Blanchard, Okla., and Anthony Fanning of Rock Hill.
