Neuman Reintroduces Alaskan Pro-Knife Bill

Following the lead of the Federal Switchblade Act amendment of 2009, and language American Knife & Tool Institute (AKTI) officials said they successfully used first in California in 2001, Rep. Mark Neuman (R), Alaska House District 15, last year introduced clarifying “bias toward closure” language to the definition of gravity knife and switchblade in Alaska’s criminal law.

Unfortunately, time ran out last year for the legislation to be passed.

But as Rep. Neuman promised, he is reintroducing HB 55 this session. As Rep. Neuman states in his Sponsor Statement, “According to the American Knife and Tool Institute, there are over 35.6 million Americans who carry and use some type of utilitarian knife which opens with one hand.”  He encourages fellow legislators to recognize the importance of one-handed or assisted-opening knives in Alaska to hunters, anglers and craftsmen, and to support the definition changes to protect Alaskans’ knife rights and clarify that the knives are legal to own and use.

Rep. Neuman attended a presentation last fall by members of the  AKTI Board of Regents who showed him several examples of knives, answered his questions and explained the advocacy goals of the organization to protect the knife industry and all knife owners from restrictive and confusing laws.

Alaskans, encourage your representatives to support HB 55.  Contact them today at http://w3.legis.state.ak.us.

Buck Knives Reports Successful 2009

0

American Commitment working, expansion planned for 2010

POST FALLS, IDAHO When Buck Knives announced their American Commitment a year ago, they
knew exactly what they wanted to do: greatly increase the percentage of knives made in their Post
Falls, Idaho plant.

“We had absolute faith in this major step; that’s why we made the commitment,” said CJ Buck,
president and CEO. “We fully anticipated a positive reaction and a successful year, but these were
forecasts and projections.”

Now the results are in for 2009, and this step forward has proved to be successful on all
counts. Dealers and consumers all reacted positively. Retail sales for Buck in a tough year for
American business were steady, headed by strength in the hunting segment of the market.
“Dealers welcomed the change,” Buck said. “They and their customers verified our belief that,
given a choice, most people prefer products Made in America.”

Based on this encouraging progress and a continued commitment to American-made product,
combined with the very positive response the new products received at the SHOT Show, Buck’s
plan for 2010 is an upsurge in domestic production. To achieve that growth they anticipate a 10%
increase in their Idaho work force.

Knife Supports Military Veteran Students

Ten dollars from each Arkansas Veterans knife sold by A.G. Russell Knives will go toward an emergency fund for military veterans who are students at the University of Arkansas.

Military veteran students at the University of Arkansas will benefit from sales of the Arkansas Veterans Folder.
A.G. Russell Knives’ Arkansas Veterans knife will support military veteran students at the University of Arkansas.

The mid-lock Arkansas Veterans Folder is based on what BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame© member A.G. Russell stated is the most popular knife he’s ever designed—the K-93 “one-hand knife.” A.G. reduced the handle length from the K-93’s 4 inches to 3. The blade pattern is what A.G. calls “general purpose” with a one-hand opening hole, and the steel is the same 8Cr13MoV stainless that appears on the company’s regular catalog knives that sell in the $45 to $95 range. Blade length: 2.5 inches.

The handle material remains the same—molded fiberglass re-enforced nylon. The handle color is the U of A’s school colors—cardinal red, with the center of the Arkansas flag inlaid in the grip’s front side. The knife does not have a pocket clip. The words “Arkansas Veteran” are etched on the blade’s obverse side. A.G. Russell Knives’ price: $19.95.

The project adds to A.G. Russell Knives’ history of supporting the U.S. military. Its “War On Troop Boredom” sent over 20,000 care packages containing books, magazines, tools and other useful items to units in Iraq and Afghanistan—and also garnered A.G. and Goldie Russell the BLADE Magazine 2004 Publisher’s Award for their efforts.

In fact, it was the War On Troop Boredom program that led A.G. and Goldie to be invited to sit on a board for the Veterans Resource and Information Center (VRIC) at U of A. The VRIC did not have an emergency fund to help its military vet students facing economic woes. Enter A.G. and Goldie and the Arkansas Veterans Folder.
