Good News for Knife Rights

Three headlines in a recent “Knife Rights” organization email newsletter bode well for Americans’ own knife rights. The three headlines read:

“Tennessee Switchblade Ban and Length Limit Repeal Bill Signed into Law by Gov. Haslam”

“Kansas Legislature Passes Knife Law Preemption Fix. Call or Email Gov. Brownback Now!”

And: “South Carolina Preemption Bill Introduced in House Companion to Senate Bill”67

Please Help Pass Knife Law Pre-emption for Georgia, the BLADE Show!

According to Knife Rights, the Georgia Senate Judiciary Committee has passed SB432, the Knife Law Preemption bill that would repeal all local knife ordinances more restrictive than state law—but your help is needed urgently to get the bill through the state’s Senate Rules Committee and a Senate floor vote.

Knife enthusiasts have only until close of business on Wednesday to get this bill through the Senate Rules Committee and a Senate floor vote. As Atlanta is home to the BLADE Show, successful passage of SB432 would not only ensure Georgia residents carrying a knife are treated fairly wherever they travel in Georgia, but all those traveling to the BLADE Show though towns and cities with knife laws more restrictive than Georgia’s otherwise decent knife laws would be safe from violation. (Author’s note: An Atlanta city ordinance makes it illegal to carry any automatic or any knife with a blade longer than 3 inches “readily available for use.”)

If you live, work or travel in Georgia, and this includes every BLADE Show exhibitor and attendee, please POLITELY contact the Chairman and Co-Chairman of the Senate Rules Committee and simply ask them to bring SB432 to a vote on the floor:

Chairman: Senator Don Balfour [email protected] (404) 656-0095
Co-Chairman: Senator Bill Hamrick [email protected] (404) 656-0036

SB432 is sponsored by Senator Bill Heath, who has worked hard getting it through to this point. Now it is important for ALL of US to help him get it through the Senate (and then on through the House).

Knife Law Preemption protects honest citizens from a patchwork of local ordinances and rules that can entrap those traveling within or through a state in possession of knives that conform to state law or wherever they live in the state. Without Knife Law Preemption, a person can be charged with a violation of law when they have no intention of violating the law.

The BLADE Show, held June 8-10 at the Cobb Galleria in Marietta, Georgia—which is basically a suburb of Atlanta—is the world’s largest knife show and pumps millions of dollars into the local and state economy. SB432 will protect the thousands of exhibitors and visitors who travel through Georgia to and from the BLADE Show to buy, sell or simply enjoy the thousands of knives on display and the many knife-related events associated with the BLADE Show.

E-MAIL Senators Balfour and Hamrick TODAY and/or call them.

Georgia Knife Preemption Becomes Law July 1

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal has signed a most important bill for knife owners and the knife industry. With his signature, Knife Rights reported, SB432 establishes knife law preemption in Georgia beginning July 1, effectively repealing draconian restrictions on knife ownership, sales and manufacturing in cities like Atlanta, home of the BLADE Show, the world’s largest knife show.

One word of caution! Please note that the new knife preemption law does not go into effect until July 1, so BLADE Show attendees should remain cautious this year, as the old laws remain in effect until the beginning of July. The BLADE Show is June 8-10.

Thanks to the members and supporters of Knife Rights who made their support known to the legislature and governor and to the bill sponsors, Georgia Senator Bill Heath and Georgia Representative David Knight.

Knife Rights’ Director of Legislative Affairs Todd Rathner worked very hard from well before this year’s legislative session started in order to pass the bill and get it signed.

Ivory Protection Act Gains Support, Needs More

The Lawful Ivory Protection Act (HR 5052) is gaining bipartisan support in the House of Representatives but needs your help to protect the legal ivory items and investments of honest American citizens everywhere.

Imagine buying an iconic Bob Loveless ivory handle knife made decades ago for $10,000—in many cases, such a knife goes for much more—and not being able to resell it for your child’s college tuition, your retirement or what have you. That’s just an example of what the current federal initiative to ban ivory would do, unless it is stopped via the Lawful Ivory Protection Act.

According to the Elephant Protection Association, the act now has the support of 20 members of the House, including 15 Republicans and five Democrats. They include: Rep. Jeff Miller (FL); Rep. Nick Rahall (WV); Rep. Kenny Marchant (TX); Rep. Collin Peterson (MN); Rep. Michael C. Burgess (TX); Rep. Bob Gibbs (OH); Rep. Matt Salmon (AZ); Rep. John Barrow (GA); Rep. Alan Nunnelee (MS); Rep. Vance McAllister (LA); Rep. Jim Matheson (UT); Rep. Michael Simpson (ID); Rep. Lamar Smith (TX); Rep. Thomas Rooney (FL); Rep. Richard Hudson (NC); Rep. Bradley Byrne (AL); Rep. Paul Broun (GA); Rep. Pete Gallego (TX); Rep. Sam Johnson (TX); and Rep. Pete Sessions (TX).

If you don’t see your representatives on the above list, call/contact them. One way to help persuade them to co-sponsor the Lawful Protection Ivory Act is to send them a “Dear Colleague Letter,” an example of which is at http://elephantprotection.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dda9c7b47b985ac6242f68cd0&id=8be4608dca&e=37f8db1ffe It provides the contact info your representative needs to co-sponsor the bill. Send it to your representative and ask him/her to be a co-sponsor. Also, with many representatives taking a summer break, now is a great time to visit their offices to ask for their support.

Also, ask whichever collector or business association to which you belong to post a statement on its website supporting the Lawful Ivory Protection Act/HR 5052 and the related Senate bill, S.2587. If they do, contact Rob Mitchell of the Elephant Protection Association so he can share that support information with the co-sponsors so they can in turn share it with their colleagues.

To find out the names of your representatives, visit http://www.opencongress.org/people/zipcodelookup

The Lawful Ivory Act needs your help!
The Lawful Protection Ivory act would enable collectors to sell their ivory knives made decades ago by such iconic cutlers as BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame© member Bob Loveless (above) if they so desire. If the federal government has its way, such sales will be illegal.

Unprecedented Scagel Auction Today and Tomorrow

Monumental, unprecedented, biggest and best—these and other superlatives accompany the auction of Dr. James Lucie’s collection of knives by Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame© member William Wales Scagel scheduled for today and tomorrow, March 12 and 13.

James D. Julia Auctioneers, one of the world’s oldest and most respected sellers of high-end guns, knives and other items, will conduct the sale at its state-of-the-art facility in Fairfield, Maine. Absentee bidders will be able to participate online and via telephone.

Dr. Lucie, 83, who served as Scagel’s personal physician before the granddaddy of modern custom knives died in 1963, amassed almost 80 Scagel knives over 50 years of collecting. Now, he said, it is “time to let go.”

“Scagels took 40 years of my life,” the ABS journeyman smith observed. “I was into them in my 30s, 40s and 50s. Now it’s time to pass it to others in their 30s, 40s and 50s. I want to get back to making knives, to making Scagels the way they should be made,” adding he has a nice backlog of orders after spending most of the past year or so working on his comprehensive book, Scagel Handmade, a history in word and picture of Scagel and his knives.

“It will be a monumental sale,” Julia said. “I don’t think anybody’s had 10 Scagels in one auction before. This one has 80 and they are the highest-quality Scagels in existence. It will be the biggest and best Scagel auction ever, and I can’t imagine an auction to match it in the future.”

The knives will be sold as part of a two-day auction that also will include two important gun collections, Confederate Civil War items and Class III machine guns. All the Scagels in the collection will be sold.

Dr. Lucie wrote the descriptions for the knives for the “lavish catalog” on which Julia prides himself for all of his company’s auctions. “Normally we use a vast array of consultants and experts in the field but in this case we [could not] get anybody better than Dr. Lucie” to write the descriptions, he noted. Julia guarantees the catalog descriptions for up to 45 days after the auction. “Nobody else does this,” he said. “That way if there’s a serious problem with the knife, you can cancel the sale.”
