Ball Bearing Lock Secures 2 Pieces Into 1

     The idea of a ball bearing used as a knife lock may seem like a contradiction. Ball bearings are designed to keep things in motion, not freeze them in place. However, it is the shape of the ball bearing that gives the Spyderco Ball Bearing Lock some of its greatest strengths.

     Since variations on knife shapes and handle materials are harder to patent, that leaves lock designs. Borrowing such a design involves paying a royalty. Devising your own lock negates paying the royalty but involves many hours of research, design and testing.

     The Ball Bearing Lock began on paper, progressed to plastic models and then to the metal prototype stage. Throughout the process, the lock’s patentability was considered—though holding a patent does not mean the patent holder is free and clear. Competitors love to pore over a design to look for loopholes to exploit. Defending a patented design is crucial to its economic success. In the end, Spyderco CEO Sal Glesser, a Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame© member, said he felt his Ball Bearing Lock was different enough to warrant a patent, and the design would be difficult to copy.

     The Ball Bearing Lock and the evolutionary caged Ball Bearing Lock comprise Spyderco’s attempt to develop a robust lock that meets martial blade craft (MBC) standards without being too bulky or hard to open or close. The hardened ball bearing, which is the main element, is allowed to rotate freely throughout its travel. Because it will always be in a different position, wear and tear is greatly reduced. Another benefit is the lock continually self-adjusts with each use. Because of its design, it can be operated on either side of the handle. An additional benefit is the lock is hard to accidentally disengage, which adds to its safety.

     One look at the Ball Bearing Lock reveals the creative thought process required in its creation. “The design objective,” Glesser noted, “was to have a fairly simple, very strong, very reliable folding knife lock.”

How It Works

When the knife is closed, the ball bearing sits in a slightly curved channel. The channel provides the track for the ball bearing, which is pushed toward the blade due to pressure from a small shaft surrounded by a coil spring. Opposite the slightly curved ramp is the other side of the channel, which is formed by the knife blade.

     As the blade pivots, the ball bearing pushes past the resistance of the closed position detent and follows a circular path until the knife approaches the open position. When the knife is nearly open, the blade channel drops away, allowing the ball bearing to push out into the channel formed at the top of the blade. Throughout the travel, the ball bearing rolls unobstructed with the outward spring pressure, providing the resistance to allow the blade to swing freely. In the open position, the pressure to close is surmounted by the ball bearing locking in place, on top by the liner and below by the blade. When the user removes the outward spring pressure by pulling back on the ball bearing, the blade can be pivoted to the closed position. The hardened ball bearing is unyielding under normal use. In the case of the newer models, a cage of a durable proprietary polymer blend surrounds and centers a smaller ball bearing. The lock action is the same.

The Knives

The Ball Bearing Lock debuted in 2002 on Spyderco’s World Trade Center (WTC) Knife, a non-profit fundraiser for victims of 9/11. On the WTC knife and the follow-up D’Allara knife, Spyderco used FRN (fiberglass-reinforced nylon) handles. The FRN made for a fairly thick, though comfortable, knife. Subsequent knives with the Ball Bearing Lock, including the Polliwog, Phoenix and Dodo, used such “flat” handle materials as stainless steel and G-10, which addressed the thickness concerns.

     The first-generation version had a large, hardened ball bearing. Some seemed concerned it took two fingers to easily slide the ball bearing back in its channel. Eric Glesser, Sal’s son, designed the newer version, which addressed the concern by making the ball bearing smaller and enclosing it in the cage that has more grip and a much thinner profile.

     The original Ball Bearing Lock was visibly different than any other lock, and some of the first models using it did not look traditional. Eric’s Polliwog design allows the ball-bearing channel to be open when the knife is closed, making it appear the ball bearing could slip out. Eric’s Dodo design features an ergonomic handle. It is scheduled to return in Spyderco’s carbon fiber and orange G-10 “Sprint Run” versions. The Phoenix, designed by knifemaker Howard Viele, also used the larger Ball Bearing Lock.

     The P’Kal has the caged Ball Bearing Lock, The knife is based on an edged martial arts technique from the Philippines, which involves an “ice-pick” grip with corresponding downward pulling thrusts. Lock strength is crucial in knives used in the martial arts, so the P’Kal needs the MBC-rated lock.

     The knife that has received the most attention of the caged series is the Manix 2. The original Manix knives featured a massive, heavy-duty design. By moving to the caged version of the Ball Bearing Lock, Spyderco changed the Manix in a positive way for everyday carry.

Use & Maintenance

The Ball Bearing Lock takes some getting used to if you are accustomed to LinerLocks™ or traditional lockbacks. Opening is the same as with other Spyderco knives via the blade hole. The difference is in closing. While it is possible to unlock the blade using one side of the lock, the best way is to pull the lock cage back with the thumb and index finger until it releases. Once the lock disengages, the blade can be pivoted closed. “People either like it or they don’t,” Sal observed. “They like the smooth action. They like the strong lock-up. We wanted it functional and easy to open, but I guess ‘not too easy’ would be one way of saying it.”

     Among the advantages of having an exposed lock is ease of cleaning. “We usually just rinse them out and add a drop of oil here and there,” Sal said. “We’ve never had an issue with the spring. These coil springs go a long time, so really there is not much maintenance, other than occasional oil.”

     The Ball Bearing Lock is one of many locks on the market. Others that share similar characteristics include the Bolt Action Lock designed by Cutlery Hall-Of-Famer Blackie Collins, and the Axis lock designed by Bill McHenry and Jason Williams and found on several Benchmade folders.

     “I think all locks compete and have advantages and disadvantages, so I don’t know that one would be better than another,” Sal opined. “Most locks will either slide or rotate; I guess [the Ball Bearing Lock] would be considered sliding, although it is more rolling than sliding that is the action of the lock.”

     Hence, the Ball Bearing Lock takes the contradictory rolling motion of a ball bearing and the sliding of a piston into a channel to lock two pieces of metal into one. It is a contradiction that works.—by David Jung

5 Military Knives for Memorial Day

Memorial Day (taking place in 2018 on Monday, May 28) holds a revered place in the hearts and minds of Americans, and knife manufacturers recognize the heritage of freedom that fits well with such a commemoration. Knives have equipped American fighting men and women since the first call for national defense more than 200 years ago, and these modern knives convey a sense of pride and honor for our time.

Buck Knives introduced the 245 MWG at the 2015 SHOT Show to honor the memory of Matthew J. Leathers, a highly decorated U.S. Navy SEAL who lost his life at sea in 2013. Matt was a member of Basic Under water Demolition/SEAL Training class 245, and the knife’s name says it all—245 to honor the class and MWG referring to the simple yet powerful phrase that was the young SEAL’s nickname: “Matt Would Go.”

The 245 MWG represents a partnership between Buck and Matt’s father, Tim Leathers. “During his nine years with the U.S. Navy SEALS, Matthew used many knives, but none that held up to his standards,” explained Stephanie Young, Buck marketing and communications manager. “He decided the only way to find a knife that met his criteria was to build it himself. Matt designed the knife that became a favorite among his fellow SEALS.”

The result of the Buck collaboration with Matt Leathers through his father is a sleek fixed-blade utility/fighting knife with a 5160 spring steel blade and tough Micarta® handle. Other features include the TEK-LOK® belt clip and a Kydex® sheath designed with a low-infrared signature.

A portion of the proceeds from sales goes to MattWouldGo LLC and in turn to the Navy SEAL Foundation.

“We are honored to bring this knife to the market for the Leathers family and happy to give something back to those who protect us,” Young commented.

Two Camillus Fixed Blades

A pair of Camillus fixed blades made to the exacting specifications of retired U.S. Army Green Beret and current military, law enforcement and survival trainer Grady Powell, and of Jared Ogden, a combat-decorated retired Navy SEAL and surface warfare officer, both of whom are featured on the National Geographic Channel TV show Ultimate Survival Alaska, makes great Memorial Day remembrance knives.

“These knives accommodate everything a SEAL or Green Beret would do in their duties,” explained Rick Constantine, Camillus marketing manager. “Both of these men had input on the design of these knives. They are true-life heroes, and that’s why we went after them. We all said we wanted to build knives that anyone would be proud to carry on active duty or elsewhere.”

Both knives feature 1095 high carbon steel blades and custom molded sheaths. Constantine said Powell wanted a knife useful in hand-to-hand situations, while Ogden stressed cutting ability and grip strength—particularly in water.

The Powell model features a half-serrated 4.87-inch blade with a G-10 handle that sports Micarta accents, and a 10.5-inch overall length.

Ogden’s knife includes a 4.75-inch blade with gut hook, a G-10 handle, a 10-inch overall length, and versatility that allows the user to fashion it into a survival spear.

“We have worked with a number of personalities through the years,” Constantine remarked, “but none have been better or more knowledgeable than these guys.”

Case FSSF V-42

When members of the First Special Service Force Association approached Case about a revival of the legendary V-42 stiletto, the company jumped at the chance.

Special Forces Association Montana Chapter 28 and a large number of knife enthusiasts supported the idea, and the new Case V-42 is true in detail to its heritage. Commissioned by U.S. Army Colonel Robert T. Frederick in 1942, the V-42 was issued to troops of the joint U.S.-Canadian First Special Service Force (FSSF), popularly known as the Devil’s Brigade. These soldiers served with distinction in World War II, and the V-42 was with them all the way. Case evaluated its own original museum V-42 and reproduced that fighting gem with painstaking accuracy.

Though the V-42 has been reintroduced a couple of times in the past, Case officials indicate this rendition is more accurate than ever.

“We really have a greater appreciation for what goes into making this knife,” said Case representative Fred Feightner. “We actually had it X-rayed to see how the handle was put together. We examined the knife from the inside out, and this was done on a much more detailed basis than previous re-releases of the V-42. The project took about five years to complete.”

The V-42’s blade of Case chrome vanadium steel—essentially, 1095 high-carbon steel with added chromium and vanadium—is double concave ground to reproduce the distinctive centerline along its length. The stacked-leather-washer handle is constructed with specialty gimping, and the famed V-42 “thumbprint” is embedded in the ricasso of the 12.5-inch, 7-ounce knife for proper blade orientation/indexing and grip strength. The leather sheath is complete with steel teeth reinforcing the sleeve and brass rivet covers.

“We’re extremely proud and honored to present a reproduction knife that is symbolic of our military elite and the American freedom they fought, and fight every day, to protect,” noted John Sullivan, Case marketing director. “Case knives and the American military share a long and distinguished history dating as far back as World War I, so we’ve taken great measure to ensure that the V-42 reproduction model meets the highest standards and is deemed authentic by the same brave Forcemen who carried the original into battle so many years ago.”

The new SEAL Strike from SOG Specialty Knives & Tools includes a 4.9-inch partially serrated AUS-8 stainless steel blade with cryogenic heat treatment, and a handle of glass-reinforced nylon.

“The biggest differentiator for the SEAL Strike is the sheath,” SOG’s Chris Cashbaugh explained. “It has several features that enhance the functions of the knife. You can use the line cutter to cut cord or webbing without having to expose the blade. The carbide sharpener is in the side of the sheath and can be used to touch up the blade while out in the field. The ferrocerium rod can help start a fire in an emergency situation.”

The SEAL Strike fits the Memorial Day theme well since its design relates to the longtime SOG collaboration with the military and the ultimate goal of producing a knife that fills the bill for troops on deployment or anyone in the field.

Knife History Made In Kansas City

Modern custom knife history was made this past weekend in the first-ever International Custom Cutlery Exposition (ICCE) held at the Marriott Downtown in Kansas City.

It was the first time the Knifemakers’ Guild and the American Bladesmith Society, the world’s two oldest and best-known knifemaker organizations, combined forces to hold a joint knife show.

And from all indications, things went about as smoothly as anyone could have hoped.

Over 120 makers exhibited their knives at the show. A number of exhibitors commented on how nice it was to see makers from both organizations displaying side-by-side and getting along so well. Of course, that was a far cry from the old days when the two groups competed openly and did not get along so well, to say the least. However, those days seemed to be forgotten over the weekend as both organizations came together and voted on the best knives of the show, with members of each group often voting for knives by makers in the other. Among the winners of the awards were Bruce Bump for Best In Show for his cut ‘n shoot knife, Paul LeBatard won an award for his stag hunter, Adam DesRosiers for Best Combat Knife and Best Hunter, Jerry Moen for Best Tactical Folder, Johnny Stout for Best Folder, Charles Vestal for Best Fighter, and J.W. Randall for Best Damascus. Other honors included Betty Dowell being presented with the Nate Posner Award and Dianna Casteel winning the Red Watson Award.

There was a lot of history at the show, as it was held in the very same showroom as the one where BLADE Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame© member Bill Moran introduced his revolutionary damascus knives at the 1973 Knifemakers’ Guild Show. In honor of that monumental event, the ICCE presented a special Bill Moran Memorial Damascus Knife Award, with the winner being Bill Burke.

Hot Knife Grips—But Not Too Hot To Handle

Preference, use, and supply and demand help determine the most popular grip materials

Getting a clear idea of what is hot in materials for knife handles can be difficult. Aside from obvious factors such as personal taste or intended use, there are considerations of supply and demand and national/international economics.

    “Typically, in our business, whatever is ‘hottest’ has more than one answer,” observes Kristi Culpepper of Culpepper & Co. “People may be looking for what’s hardest to get and consider that material hot because of its rarity.” Shannon Edgington of Knife & Gun Finishing Supplies (K&G) has a similar take.

    “Stabilized woods are hot and look great, with box elder burl the most successful dyeing wood,” she says. Aside from the woods, Edgington noted that water buffalo “is being jigged to look like impala and stag.” Meanwhile, giraffe bone continues to get heavy use as a handle material.

    “It’s pretty hot because it’s available, and you can get it in natural dyed colors, and it can also look like ivory,” says Sandy McClure of Giraffebone.com, which deals primarily in African materials. “There is plenty of giraffe bone because lions are still killing giraffes through a [natural] culling process,” she notes.

    A different perspective accompanies trends in synthetic handles. Chris Hartman, co-president of Masecraft Supply Co., says G10 laminates and canvas paper and linen Micarta® remain hot. “The materials are impact resistant, waterproof and highly suitable for individual makers and manufacturing without worry of warping, twisting, shrinking or cracking,” he notes. “In addition, the substances are readily available and cost effective, thus far better suited than natural materials for the high-tolerance needs of today’s manufacturers.” Mike Sheffield of Sheffield Knifemakers Supply shares Hartman’s assessment.

    “Working/tactical knifemakers and manufacturers are buying Micartas and G10s because they are easier to machine, get in sheets and cut out handles,” he says. “Micarta and G10 also tend to hold up better than natural products.” 

    Hartman indicates the Masecraft line of paua, abalone and awabi shell and acrylic laminated veneer sheets is finally beginning to take off. “These are great new products as they look genuine, use a combination of actual shell and acrylic, and are less than a third of the cost of solid-shell-laminated sheets. It’s like working with acrylic with all the natural beauty of real shell,” he notes. “Two years ago we started to develop some of these materials. It always seems to take about two years from prototype to actually showing up on production knives.”

    Sheffield says his company has been applying CNC machining to grips. “I’ve been making handles for a couple of manufacturers and producing an end product out of Micarta or G10 to their specifications,” he states. “I scan their template/design and produce a handle for them on a short-run basis.” For example, using a regular blank Sheffield has been selling for years, he can produce a pattern you would expect to see on bone, a process that accounts for the jigged-bone appearance seen on some Micarta and G10 handles. 

    According to Hartman, composites also have grown in popularity.  “[The supply of composites is] steadier than that of natural products, and the materials themselves are more stable and cost effective for individual makers and manufacturers,” he says. “In addition, some of the best composite materials are made in the USA, and are far better suited for today’s high-tolerance manufacturing needs, with good durability.” 

 

New Resources

The natural material side of the handle market is also dynamic, with suppliers always on the lookout for new and interesting resources.

    “We currently have a supply of bison bone and jaws [dating back to] the Pleistocene Era that have been underground and exposed to ground minerals, so they have the coloring and look of mammoth ivory,” Culpepper reports. “We also have a stock of whale bone that should be coming into the custom market on some knives, some traditional jigged patterns in hot new colors for 2012 like Sunset and Bamboo, and several new jigged patterns.” She points out that a number of companies that specialize in tactical knives are updating their more traditional lines with limited-edition dyed and jigged bone, mother-of-pearl inlays and other natural materials. Meanwhile, Edgington says K&G’s resin wood shows promise for handles. “It has gone through a lot of testing and has been found to be similar to Micarta, and is used in various patterns for kitchen knives and cutting boards,” she notes.  

    Hartman says red carbon fiber did not make the cut. “It was simply too expensive to produce with not enough demand to support the cost,” he says. “We developed a new product which uses black carbon fiber with red G10 layering, creating a hybrid available in several colors including blue, yellow and soon a carbon fiber with a green layer.” The material has the advantage of being “about a third less expensive than the old red carbon fiber,” Hartman notes.  Sheffield also has a material that is a red-and-black carbon fiber alternating with G10.

 

Scarcity and Shortages

I asked whether sambar stag, ironwood and mother-of-pearl remain scarce, and if there will be any shortages in other natural materials.

    “Natural materials have such a demand all over the world that the U.S. is no longer first on the list when it comes to purchasing them,” Culpepper says. “Mother-of-pearl and stag both are commodities in China because of uses in all their industries, from furniture and jewelry [mother-of-pearl] to medicine [stag].”  Hartman concurs, opining that eventually sambar stag and ironwood either will disappear or the price will become so outrageous that only a few will be able to afford them—though for now both are available in pretty good supply.

    “Actually, I believe it will be the cost of bone, horn and exotic woods you will see continuously rise over the next several years,” Hartman notes. “Eventually, these supplies will be wiped out or the labor force that’s willing to cut and supply them will have moved on to better jobs. Sources of these products in China are already gone due to economics, and prices from India are on the rise with supplies decreasing.” Though these things are happening now, it is difficult to provide an accurate time frame in which the changes will be felt in a meaningful way.

    “Business has been very slow related to the economy since knifemakers are not buying unless they’re selling something,” McClure observes. “They’re not stockpiling anything but are using what they have.” Sheffield notes there is a lot more competition and Edgington says she does not carry the stock as in years past. “We don’t want to come across as price gouging and will absorb a lot to keep the prices down for the customer,” she sighs, “but the price to us keeps going up on the nice stuff.” Hartman agrees, concluding on a positive note, “The knife and gun industries seems to be much more stable than other similar markets in this economy.”
